PLUS Elon’s Grok Model and Learn to Build Your AI Sidekick

Read time: 4.5 minutes

Welcome to Genuinely Artificial!

This newsletter will augment your reality with AI insights, automation, and antics.

I’ll be operating as your own personal researcher, data scientist, data analyst, and tech journalist all rolled up into one.

With your help, we should be able to reach 100% worldwide subscribership within 34 newsletters if we double each time. Seems doable.

It’s the 4th newsletter release and I’m happy to say we’ve officially doubled our subscriber base reaching one step closer to worldwide subscribership. 🤝

4 × 2 = 8 subscribers achieved (currently pacing ahead of this 😁)

8 subscribers × 231 to go. 🤷‍♂️ 2 34 ~ 8.6 billion population 🌎️

Grab a coffee because OpenAI made some big announcements and we don’t want to short-change you on the updates. GPTs are about to multiply like apps in Apple’s App Store. You can now build your own AI assistant. Elon’s xAI releases Grok chatbot that will likely be white noise during OpenAI’s tidal wave of a week and it’s only Tuesday.

Let’s get into it with…

INDUSTRY NEWS

Build your own no-code ChatGPT for specific purposes

OpenAI DevDay did not disappoint with some HUGE announcements. You can now create and share your own ChatGPT for custom use cases.

The GPT app store era has officially arrived.

OpenAI wants to lower the barrier to building and has made the creation of GPTs non-techy friendly with no coding required.

  1. You can now build your own custom ChatGPT for unique use cases.

  2. Create your very own writing coach, tech advisor, negotiator, and more!

  3. Structured for personal use or company internal use, safety built-in.

  4. You can create and share your GPTs publicly in the store launching later this month.

  5. ChatGPT Plus took a breath mint to freshen up. Updated knowledge now includes real-world events up until April 2023.

GPT-4 goes turbo 🤯

OpenAI announced several updates and new offerings.

GPT-4 Turbo debuts with 128K context, >300 pages worth of text in a single prompt.

  • Price reduced by 3x 🤯

  • Improvements in function calling with enhanced accuracy

  • Now multimodal capabilities including vision, DALL·E 3 for image creation, and text-to-speech

The platform also introduces reproducible outputs, log probabilities for outputs, and model customization with fine-tuning and custom models.

OpenAI also announced a significant price reduction across its platform and higher rate limits for developers. 🙌

Additional announcements:

  • They introduced Copyright Shield to defend and cover costs for customers against copyright infringement claims. 🛡️

  • Further improvements have been made to Whisper large-v3 for automatic speech recognition and the release of the Consistency Decoder has been announced (photo examples still show progress to be made).

AUTOMATION AND ANTICS

AUTOMATION ALLEY

Supercharge your new GPTs with Zapier’s 6,000+ apps

Zapier announced its AI Actions tool made for builders to equip AI platforms or custom integrations with the ability to run any of the 20,000+ Zapier search/action capabilities.

How it works

You can use an AI assistant (like ChatGPT) with Zapier to run any action on its platform.
Examples:
  1. Send a Slack message

  2. Find a Google Calendar event

  3. Draft an email

AI Platforms available

  1. Chat GPT and GPTs - equip GPTs natively within ChatGPT

  2. Zapier - use within Zaps or Zapier Chrome Extension

  3. Custom - build private integration via a Rest API

ANTICS AVENUE

First “based” AI chatbot released by Elon’s xAI comes with real-time access to X

The team at xAI wants to create AI tools to assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge and with that in mind they have released their first product, Grok.

This AI chatbot is modeled after Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy where it gets its name.

Key differences vs. other chatbots

  1. Designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and a rebellious streak, humor included

  2. Has real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform

  3. Will answer spicy 🔥 questions often rejected by other AI systems

Grok-1, the frontier LLM model, showed promising results vs. industry benchmarks of similar compute size. Pretty impressive with a model that has only been in development for four months.

Evaluations using standard ML benchmarks to measure math and reasoning abilities.

TOOLS, TUTORIALS, & TESTIMONIALS

TOOL & TUTORIAL SPOTLIGHT

Build an AI assistant within your own application

Create an assistant that uses Code Interpreter with the following integration steps.

  1. Create an Assistant in the API by defining custom instructions and picking a model. If helpful, enable tools like Code Interpreter, Retrieval, and Function calling.

  2. Create a Thread when a user starts a conversation.

  3. Add Messages to the Thread as the user asks questions.

  4. Run the Assistant on the Thread to trigger responses. This automatically calls the relevant tools.
